OUGD505 / PERSONAL EVALUATION

OUGD505 / STUDIO BRIEF 2
PERSONAL EVALUATION

Personally I am not very happy with the progress that I made through out this particular part of the module. I did enjoy the brief but I think it just took me too long to get into it as well as being a little overwhelmed with the amount of work i had to complete in a short period of time. I feel that this project has so much more potential than what i was able to do with it which is very frustrating to me. I do really like the concept I cam up with along with the visuals, however I feel I could have gone a lot further with it, but time did not allow.

I would have liked to have experimented more with different print process which would have given more to the ethos of my brand as well as pushing the concept of stages of chocolate strength into something more unique and workable. I would have also liked to have incorporated some more informational pieces into the packaging and with in the proposed establishment to make it more viable and focussed regarding the production methods that the chocolate produce has to go through.

I think, were I went wrong was taking on that last brief in the Responsive module which was a rather big brief and took up quite a bit of time were I should really have started to develop this project more. I am not making excuses, because i do like what I have done. I just think that I need to address my time management issues and get better at balancing the projects I am doing.

In the future I would like to think that I could once again pick up this brief and complete in to a higher standard in the third year as I did enjoy it but I am not satisfied with the progress.

OUGD505 / EVALUATION

EVALUATION

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I have become a lot more competent when applying an aesthetic and brand to multiple formats while keeping them consistent and integral to the original brand. This stems past the obvious now I have a better knowledge and understanding of print possibilities.

This relates to the brand guidelines and how this helps to keep branding consistent when working wit and through other practitioners.

This is the first time I have really designed for print that has had to be adapted to different products such as bottles and jars. Working with these formats made me realise the ‘fiddlyness’ of applying labels that do not follow the norm. In the future I will look into different kinds of labelling that work with adhesive and vinyl as I think this would make the making process a lot quicker and also lend a more professional finish.

What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

Creating an aesthetic that can be used across a wide range of products as well as web is something that I now keep in mind a lot more when approaching a brief that needs consideration of branding and identity. Realising that working on something that has to be viable in the ‘real world’ means that I, as the designer, may not always have control on how the work is distributed. Using brand guidelines in this circumstance will now be a common thing with in my work.

Approaching a design that has to consider cost and manufacturing process has been something I have tried to apply within this module.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I feel that I have a really good concept regarding both my research publication and my chocolate range. I feel they are cohesive yet are different enough to make each aspect special. I feel that the ide behind my designs are viable and would work when given more input, however time did not allow this at this time.

I think because people today are a lot more aware about the origins of there food when considering things such as quality and ethics, My brand could sit quite nicely in and between existing chocolate based brands yet offer something more unique.

Even though I still feel I need to work on my crafting. I do think that it has improved over the module. The research publication and its packaging all fit perfectly as I am now taking more time when measuring and laying out work to print.

I feel that through the research publication. My consideration of layout as well as the combination of type and image has improved a lot and I am very pleased with how my publication turned out.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

My time management throughout this module has been pretty poor. This is defiantly the case for design brief 2. Balancing all the different modules at once, and having so many hand-ins in consecutive weeks did not allow me to work very efficiently and there fro the potential of my ideas and product were not achieved with the success I would have liked.

This time management issue then effected the consideration of my brand regarding the products that could be proposed as well as the finer details to the branding of the actual establishment.

Not dedicating enough time to this brief meant that my motivation in the early stages was hindered and Id prefer to go and complete things for other modules. This meant that I only really got into this brief to late in the day which has really frustrated me as I can see the potential but had not time to capitalise.

5. Identify things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

In the future I will ensure I dedicate set amounts of time for each module in order to have balanced work and finished products that are more polished and viable.

Planning my time will not only allow me to execute my ideas well but also make changes along the way if needed rather than having to stick with what I have due to a lack of time.

I would have liked to apply same different print process to enhance my aesthetic further as well as have physical examples of how this would work. For example, screen printing fabric of cushion and table cloths and allow using the vinyl cutter to apply print to dining ware. I would have liked to have experimented with the laser cutter also to add finer detail to my brand and the products that could be used in the Café/coffee shop.

I think that my lack of motivation early on was due to the lack of interest in my initial subject. In the future I will choose a research subject more carfully and make sure it is something that I know I will enjoy rather than picking something random.
