SECONDARY RESEARCH.
DESIGNBOARD 2.
I wanted to look into were our recycled food waste, collected by the council, ends up and how it is recycled. I looked on there 'recycle now' website to gather more information.

I then looked into home composting in more detail as it slightly differs from the mass recycling.

After coming together at the crit on the Friday and presenting our further research to the group we were then given the task 'How can you get more people to recycle'.
To answer this problem we all agreed that we should look into the fact that many big name brands could do more to promote the act of recycling. because many people are influenced to buy from certain brands such a Nike, Topshop and River island, these outlets could instigate, promote and make it aware to the many customers that it is important to recycle.

DESIGN PROCESS
RESEARCH AND METHODS.

Identify quickly what works and what doesn't so your research is quality to the problem you are aiming to solve.

10 REASONS WHY RESEARCH IS IMPORTANT.
1 - Quality, Depth and accuracy of you outcome.
2 - Justified response  to the specific problem.
3 - Opens up different pathways through new knowledge.
4 - Engage and reflect on current practice.
5 - Informs and develops your opinions and perspective of on the particular subject.
6 - Its ongoing and never runs out.
7 - Allows experimentation and testing.
8 - Allows you to document  your thought processes for future reference.
9 - Gives an order to vast amounts of information.
10 - Process of elimination helps you to investigate and find the most successful outcome.

10 METHODS THAT GIVE US A BREDTH OF INFORMATION TYPES.
    (METHODS = ACTIONS YOU TAKE)

WAYS IN WHICH MY RESEARCH PRACTICE IS HINDERED.
TIME - This is due to many different factors
> Travel time to and from collage.
(takes up at least 3 hours of my day, even though I often sketch during journeys).
> Tight deadlines for briefs
(having one week to research as well as complete and execute a brief to a high standard often leaves little time for thorough, in-depth research).
> Multiple Tasks and briefs at one time.
(Making sure you designate enough time to your research as well as other ongoing work from different areas can sometimes be difficult).
MONEY
> Printing out many different bits of work often takes up a lot of money. Sometimes I believe this is also waists money as all my research is already on my blog and once I have printed it and shown it, it is then discarded.

10 WAYS IN WHICH, AS A GROUP, WE COULD IMPROVE OUR RESEARCH PROCESSES.
1 - More discussion in between us.
2 - Generation of variable types of research methods.
3 - Gain a more in-depth knowledge of our subject matter.
4 - Keep each other updated with progress, development and ideas.
5 - Feedback to each other with honest and constructive feedback.
6 - Create design sheets to communicate visually.
  7 - Attention to consistency.
8 - Make sure everyone is comfortable and satisfied with the work produced.
9 - Fair distribution of work to ensure quality.
 10 - Patience, Persistance, Positivity & praise.

PROGRESS ON CURRENT BRIEF.
INITIAL IDEAS.

As a group we decided to go with the sub-focus to recyceling that Anisha had been concentrating on 'RECYCLING CAMPAIGNS'. We all believed that this would be one of the easiest routes to go down due to the tight deadline.
We all agreed that if big, famous brands and institutions would take it more upon themselves to advertise the possibilities and benefits of recycling, more people would feel more inclined to do so. These brands could use their influence to promote this economical cause.

Through research we discovered that many companies already have various campaigns to do with recycling, However due to the lack of promotion and information know body really realises what possibilities are possible to them. We also believed that if consumers of this famous brands had more of an incentive to take part in these campaigns and events, more people would take part as well as gain knowledge that could influence their choses in the long term. This incentive could take the form in some kind of discount, such as 'bring in an old pair of shoes and get 10% off you next Nike purchase'.

Because we want to bring to attention the possible influences famous/popular brands  could have when it comes to the economical benefits of recycling, we first came up with 5 brands that we were regular consumers of.
We decided to use these examples of influential brands to create a series of posters to pre mote the fact that these brands and 100's like them should make more of an effort to use there powers in a 'green' way.
(We chose 5 because there are 5 people in our group).
NIKE = Recycling trainers and other foot ware.
ADIDAS = Clothing.
TESCOS = Food waste.
APPLE = Electronic goods.
COKE-COLA = Plastic bottles and cans.

We decided choose specific recyclable goods for each brand ensuring they related to the institute in question. This will raise awareness of the different things that can be recycled as well as showing that all of these brands are working together to do their bit.

POSTER SOLUTIONS.
During our group get together on the monday. Discussed different ways in which could approach the question we were given. After a few different suggestions and talking about the significance of the logo's them selfs and how they don't need any added text as the are so recognisable, i came up the suggestion that we could create the logos using items that could be recycled. For example, the apple logo could be made from electronic goods and the recognisable coca-cola bottle shape could be made up of cans and bottles.

We set each other the task of creating these posters. We made sure that we each understood the layout and style we were aiming for.

After agreeing on the aesthetic of our eerie of poster we then decided shoe would create which posters
Anisha - Apple logo (made from electrical goods).
Laura - Tescos logo (made from various food items).
Lizzy - Coka-Cola bottle (madefrom cans and bottles).
Caitlin - Nike logo (made from various footwear).
        - Adidas (made from various bits of clothing).

POSTER CONSTRUCTION
CREATING THE LOGO THROUGH RECYCLABLE GOODS.
Through my research I think I have enough to justify the fact the Nike's recycling schemes are very under promoted. I then decided to move on to and start to work on my poster.

I started by gathering as many shoes as i could find in the house (especially old pairs). I made sure the shoe I used were very variable, some flip-flops, trainers, slipper, walking shoes etc. This is so my design would display the fact that you can hand in any footwear as it is all recyclable.
I laid out a bed sheet because the white background will make it easier for my to edit after i have taken photos and uploaded them to Photoshop.

i then just started to place and arrange the shoes to create the Nike tick logo.

It took a few re-arrangements to make sure the Nike tick was to proper proportion and scale. But after multiple try-outs I managed to get the shape near perfect.
 FINISHED NIKE TICK
Because I had to use multiple shoes, the logo ended up being pretty large. to get a proper square on photograph i had to stand on a ladder.

RENDERED PHOTOSHOP NIKE TICK

I uploaded the best image of my tick and digitalised the photo using photoshop. To do this i used the selection tool to highlight the negative space created by the sheet in the background. I then used a slightly opaqued, softened eraser and when though the selected area making the eraser smaller as i got in closer to the main feature. Before i used the araser tool i also used the brightness and contrast toll as well as the vibrance tool to enhance the clarity of the image making it easier to make out why the tick is made of.

I then started to experiment with typography and layout to which our poster series could conform to. Before I could do this properly I had to think about what text would accompany the image on the poster.
While thinking about a slogan I thought back to my sporting days and how I had people I looked up to and used this to mirror that feeling of aspiration as this is the ethos we are aiming for through this campaign. having consumers influenced through a good example as well as other franchises and brands. 'Be the Example' is short yet powerful and along with the very recognisable logo gives a feeling of leadership. It also (in blunt terms) makes people think Nike are cool and they promote recycling, therefore recycling is cool and we will be cool because we recycle.
I also decided to accompany this slogan with 'Be the influence for something that matters' I came up with this because many clothing brands aim to follow, create and sell the newest and most popular fashions and this is there overall job. However when you think about it, this is a very unimportant and sometimes fake thing. Because of this, promoting something that concerned every single one of us environmentally gives this brand something more important advertise.

I experimented with a few different typefaces however before i did this i new i wanted something sans serif and simple to enhance the straight forward simplicity of the poster. After testing several i settled on the typeface 'Futura'.

Having the slogan and added text aligned down in the left hand corner keeps it out of the way of the image. This is so the text doesn't impact the strength of the nike logo. Even though i was happy with this layout, i think there still needs to be more information on what is being premoted and also something to display the partnership wit recycle now.

First i created a QR code via the website - http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ . This will allow passers by to scan this code which can the direct them straight to the recyclenow website.

I then started to experiment with how to incorporate the, very recognisable, recyclenow logo into the poster layout without making the layout seem cluttered. To help with this concept, i made the logo as faint as possible. I think this makes it more subtle as the recyclenow organisation is not seen in the same, cool and popular way to with the Nike brand is. therefore gavin the logo faded like this doesn't over shadow the Nike ethos.

LOGO & CODE AT THE TOP

EXPERIMENTING WITH TEXT LAYOUT

PREFERRED LAYOUT

I have decided to make the arrow logo slightly smaller because even though it is faded, too large, I distracts from the main feature of the poster. I also decided to get rid of the recyclenow text because i think that the campaigns arrow logo is strong enough and recognisable enough to stand on its own. I also decided to add a little more information on what the poster is aiming to promote 'Hand in the scruffs to get discounted kick'. I used this king of language because i believe it would relate more to the youthful majority of consumers to the Nike stores.

EVALUATION
I am very happy with the way in which this poster has turned out. I think that the simple layout helps to enhance the strong logo image making it very eye-catching. The lack for text helps to get the message across in a quick yet bold way with the main image intriguing viewers to find out the reason behind it. The inclusion of the QR code keeps the poster/campaign up to date as well as making it very easy for the consumer to gain more knowledge and get involved. I think that this poster along with our idea helps aim the benefits of recycling to an audience that may not be very knowledgeable about it and also may not have much access to it.

As well as the Nike logo I nominated myself to do an extra poster for Adidas. We had decided that the Adidas logo should be made from clothing so i used the same bed sheet to create the white background a constructed the adidas logo from pieces of clothing.

After setting out the logo the first time it was very out of proportion so it took me a few trys to correct this and make it a perfect as possible.

I eventually managed to get the logo in good proportion as well as taking a photo in direct birds eye view by using a ladder. I then uploaded the image on to the Photoshop software and enhanced the image as well as cleaning up the background using the same method as i did with the Nike logo.
I then applied the same layout I had given the Nike poster. I also had to adjust the scale of the image so it appeared straight. I changed the text slightly to say 'Hand in your scruffs to get discounted clothing' so it made it more directed to the merchandise we are planning the adidas brand to exchange

POSTER SERIES
As a group we met up on the Thursday as we had all completed our poster logos.

TESCO LOGO - LAURA

COKE-COLA BOTTLE - LIZZY

APPLE LOGO - ANISHA

We all were happy with the logo designs we had each come up with. I presented my poster layout idea to the rest of the group and everyone was happy with the prototype. We then had to make sure that the added text related to the brand shown.
APPLE - Hand in your electronics to keep the current flowing.
TESCO - Hand in your waste for discounted taste.
COKE-COLA - Hand in your bottles to get discounted fizz.

Once we had discussed these accompaniments we then applied the same template to each logo image.

CONCERTINA.
I had the idea to have accompanying leaflets to the posters so information to the campaign was more available to shoppers. After speaking as a group we decided a concertina type leaflet would be the best way to go as there are multiple bit of information for each individual brand. I volunteered to create the concertina.

I decided to make the concetina leaflet up off six panel. This will allow me to display each individual image on its own panel as well as having a Title page. To do this I used the guideline tool to split up the long page equally so that each image can be placed in the middle of each panel. I then used the same logo design that appears on the posters for the front of the concertina so this leaflet is recognisable to the cause.

To add information to this leaflet I created the same layout with the guidelines as on the front to indicate were the folds in the paper will be. Using the actual logos from the involved brands helps the cause seem more relatable as most consumer recognise these logos. To add to the simple monochrome layout that has already been applied to this cause I displayed the logos in a soft grey tone.

Underneath each of the logos we decided on information that elaborated what each brand offered to exchange for secondhand goods. It also adds information on how you can trade in these goods. Each of these informational panels will line up adjacent to the handmade versions created by the group.
On the back of the Title/front page I added the QR code again making it easier for consumers to get further information on the designated website. I added the basics of the scheme and how it will come to fruition so consumers can understand exactly why the cause is trying to apply. We decided to add  hint of colour to 'recyclenow' to make it stand out so it is not completely over-shadowed by the monochrome layout. The green colour his very recognisable to issues dealing with the environment.

As well as adding the colour to the recyclenow name, we also decided to add it to the various offers displayed with in the text for each brand. Bringing attention to this may encourage consumers to take brands up on this offer and get involved with the scheme.

EVALUATION.
I think considering the time in which we had to complete this project, our solution is very effective. I believe that if we could research more into how and were this campaign would take place it would be very possible to put into motion.
If we had more time I think that a few of our logo images could be executed to a higher standard, however due to the short time frame and lack of equipment available to us (e.g. digital cameras/photo booths) the work and effort applied was better than expected. I think as a series of posters they are a very strong and work well together. However as individual pieces I feel that they are lacking slightly. If we had more time this would be the main thing i would focus on.
