InDesign Brief - Penguins (OUGD406)

OUGD406
INDESIGN BRIEF.
ANIMAL - PENGUINS.

INITIAL IDEAS.
As well as thinking of the obvious animal, I had a few ideas that could view this brief in alternative lights.

PENGUIN BOOKS

PENGUIN BISCUITS

Having so many variants in product may also be a bonus when creating a double page spread. Categorising and organising maybe a fun way to display this product along with flavours and ingredients.

PENGUIN CLOTHING

After looking at alternatives to the 'penguin' directed brief, I thought that it would be better to stick with the animal penguin. Because the brief has to conform within a the format of the double page spread, I fell that this will limit the amount of space i will have to display a justified amount of information.

After researching the penguin species (shown on my context blog) it allowed me to start thinking about what kind of information I wanted to display on my Double page spread.

Firstly I felt that having the many categories of penguin explained would be a good way of displaying information
To do this i had the idea of having the characteristics of each penguin deployed through illustrated images.

I took a basic silhouette of a penguin and then began to sketch the silhouette several times with the different characteristics presented on both.

I felt that the sketches do not fully show off the differences between each type of penguin therefor the message of difference would not be so obvious.

I started to experiment with using images the simply showed the heads of each penguin so that the differences were in full photographic view.

After surfing through internet images, it was hard to find photographs that had the penguins heads in the same position as well as these photographs being high quality. I wanted each image of each penguin to have a similar head position so that the double page spread would look organised and consistent.

While struggling to find images consistent with each other and of a high quality, I began to go off this idea. i only have limited space when completing this double page spread and there a 186 species of penguin which i would have to display. These images would then have to be accompanied by a considerable amount of text.
Because of this I decided that it would be best to choose one penguin species and base my double page spread on that.

THE KING PENGUIN
There are many different facts that i have found out about king penguins that I have found out through my research (shown in my Design context blog). Because of this I have decided to base my research on this species of penguin.

I took many images from the internet and started to experiment with my favourite ones.
(images shown on Design context blog).

I got rid of the landscape background on this image and played around with the characteristics of this penguin.

I duplicated this layer and enhanced the colour on one and tried the second one to greyscale.

I then played around by cutting out the distinctive features if the penguin keeping these bits in full colour. this could allow to lane each characteristic.

I played on illustrator trying to come up with icons and illustrations that could be used for my pages.

I liked the idea of using a crown simple to help indicate the king penguin.
I experimented with the idea of a crest while using colours that a relative to the cold conditions penguins are subject to.

I really like the mountain range graphic here as well as using the crown in replacement of the actual word king.

I started to adapt these icons into a kind of info graphic with different illustrated images.
The snow-flake indicated the frozen temperature, the fish shows food source and the egg displays 14month the offspring cycle.

I played with this crest idea with an amazing image i had found showing the landscape of Antarctica.
I really like the effect this has when layered of this photograph. I think the frosted effect also helps to reflect the cold climate of the king penguins home.

After experimenting with different possibilities of content I started playing with images with in the double page spread so i could start to visualise ideas with in the document.

I liked the idea of having the landscape image spread over the DPS to symbolise the vastness of the environment. I also think that incorporating the blue icy colour reflects the condition.
