Message & Delivery3 - Distrobution(OUGD403)

NOVEMBER 12TH 2012
MESSAGE & DELIVERY- PART 2
DISTRIBUTION.
OUGD403

Create a mail shot based on your previous research brief tasks.
Make your poster designs and concept into something that can be posted in an envelope.

I want to come up with a mail shot that comes in the form of a campaign to make people aware of the alternative to drugs in sport.

INITIAL IDEAS:
SKETCHES
MAKING THE SEEMS OF THE ENVELOPE LOOK LIKE THE PEEL OF A BANANA & PLAYING WITH THE LAYOUT OF THE ENVELOPE SHAPE.

HAVING THE TOP OF THE BANANA OVER THE FLAP SHOWN YOU TAKING THE TOP OFF THE BANANA.

I think that this the Chiquita sticker is very recognisable because they are shook on many of the bananas supplied by super marks. I thought about using this to keep the envelope closed but because of the colour restrictions this wouldn't be possible for this brief.

ENVELOPE IDEA DEVELOPMENT.
AESTHETICS & OPENING MECHANISM.

From my initial ideas and sketches, I think that my envelope may be the most complicated thing. because of this i decided to tackle that first. I wanted to make an envelope resemble a banana because in a way a banana and n envelope are pretty similar!
You peel a banana to get at the flesh of the fruit.
You peel back an envelope to retrieve your post.
Even though the way in which both can be opened is similar, they are obviously totally different and would not really be thought about in the same way. I want to try and relate these to opposites.

So I could visualise my idea more clearly, I drew a closed banana using the pen toll on Photoshop. i made sure that the style of my closed banana resembled that of the images I have already created in the previous posters.

MY CLOSED BANANA IMAGE.
CREATED ON PHOTOSHOP.

To start my envelope I took the measurements and dimensions of a DL envelope and re-created them on photoshop using various shape tools.

ENVELOPE TEMPLATE - PHOTOSHOP SCREENSHOTS.
To ensure my Mail shot remains consistent with my original posters I used the eye-dropper tool to make sure all of the colours were the same.
I printed these templates out on A4 just to test the how I should cut and fold my full-size envelope.

PRINTED TEMPLATE CUT OUT.

OUTLINE ENVELOPE FLAP.

I tried to use the outline of the banana as the flap of the envelope to save me time in stead of scoring each one. However I am not happy with the out come of this.

 NEW CUTOUT ENVELOPE TEMPLATE.

I will have to make sure to properly score the envelope while it is dismantled because once it i assembled and glued I will not be able to do this.

OUTSIDE & INSIDE SCORED ENVELOPE.

To hid the score marks , so as not to make it too obvious, I followed the the peel line. this will also simulate the familiar way in which we peel actual bananas.
 CLOSE UP SCORING.

To make the opening of the envelope easier and more obvious, I cut out around the top end of the banana. this make it easier to grab and tear the strip as you have more room for you fingers to pinch the tip.

OPENING TAB.

THE BANANA ENVELOPE TEST.
EASIER TO SEE ON FULL SCREEN MODE.
TAKEN ON A PHONE CAMERA
Because I have to fully seal the envelope to allow the opening mechanism will work, i will have to arrange the contents appropriately before glueing.

I think that this banana envelope works very well. Because the envelop is colourful and 'not the norm' it will make people want to open it when it come through the post. I think it will also intrigue, therefore making people want to know what has been sent and taking the time to read and understand it content. The unique opening mechanism will also leave a lasting effect as it is humorous and very different to the typical envelope.

CONTENTS.
WHAT TO INCLUDE IN MY MAIL SHOT?
RELEVENT, MEMORABLE & INFORMATION.

INTIAL IDEA.
1). ACCOMPANYING INFORMATION?
 - The dangers of Doping, how it effects health.
 - The dangers of Doping, how it effects career and reputaion.
 - Other drugs doping methods and the alternatives.
 2). VOUCHERS FOR BANANAS?
 - Create a partnership with certain supermarkets.
 - Multiple vouchers.
2). BANANA RECIPE LEAFLET?
 - Multiple recipes using bananas?
 - Recipes based around the health of athletes
 - Banana bread, Banana muffins, fruit salad, Frozen bananas, Smoothies etc.

I defiantly know that I want to have my Type and Image poster from the previous accompanying brief in my mail shot because I think It displayed my message strongly.

BANANA RECIPES.
I liked the idea of having a fun and informational leaflet showing different recipes evolving around the banana fruit. However when I looked further into this I realised that many of the recipe's such as banana bread or muffins ,although healthy, would not really be the type of foods that serious sports people would be interested in. Because blood doping is a very serious matter only serious/professional athletes might feel the pressure to take route to improving performance, therefore the recipe book would not suit the audience I would be wanting to target.

ACCOMPANYING INFORMATION.
I most defiantly want more information on the issue I am trying to bring awareness to. I think making reference to other forms of doping would give my too much to do in the short time we have to complete this project. As well as this I think it would distract from the main theme I have already created with the banana.
I think to enhance the theme of the wonders of the humble banana, I will include more information that display its benefits however I'm not quite sure on how to do thins yet.

BANANA VOUCHERS
I think vouchers are a good way of getting people to remember this information i am presenting to them. When they use the vouchers they will remember were that got them from and why they have been sent. People appreciate free stuff and just getting a couple of banana for free may influence there choices in the future.
Through researching as well banana's are big produce in the fair-trade world. this means that many supermarkets would like to get on board because it wouldn't just raise my issue's but it would also help to them to promote there own agenda's. Because of this it is something i would like to include into my mail shot. I also think Tesco's would be a good supermarket brand to use as they are often sponsors to many different sporting activities. They also regularly send vouchers through the post if you are a Tesco's club card holder (which i am).

BANANA VOUCHERS.

My initial idea wat to make my vouchers look like a prescription, this way I could make the vouchers even more personal by also having the address on the mock prescription. this would also continue with the 'sciencey' medical theme. However because the addresses we are sending them to are not really individual people I don't thick this would have the desired effect. Because of this i decided to use a similar idea of making the vouchers look like a pill or a pack of pills. This still runs with the medical ethos surrounding this issue but also continues with the humorous undertones with out being to serious.

To start with i created a rectangular shape with rounded edges to imitate the same shape as a pill packet. So this voucher will fit accurately into the envelope I measured it so th long edge will fit vertically inside the envelope. (11cm by 5.5cm).

PILL IMAGES.
I used the same pill I had previously made for the originally banana pill poster. This helps the voucher remain consistent and recognisable to the cause. I thin just duplicated the layer several times and used the guidelines to lay them out precisely.

FULL PILL PACKET.
I duplicated the full line of pill and placed them underneath spacing the appropriately.

To try and make the pill packet more like the real thing I added the air pocket line that always runs down the middle. I also tried to emulate the crisscross texture these packet usually have. I did this by using a hatched brush.

I also swapped the pill around after realising that this arrangement is more realistic and tried to make it look as if the pills are inside a plastic bubble .

VOUCHER WITH BANANA IMAGE

VOUCHER WITH PILL IMAGE
On the voucher i used the same type of typographic style i had previously used on my poster based on type. This keeps my work consistent. I think the voucher with the pill on it is clearer ad the image has less detail than the banana one. I still want to play around with the layout and arrangement.

To keep the vouchers together while inside the envelope I wanted to make a little sleeve to slip them in and out of.
FRONT OF SLIP

BACK OF SLIP

I just made the front of the slip plain so it does not distract from the vouchers in side. I imitated the way in which food products display the nutrition inside the food to show what a banana has to offer. A made the background colour the bright yellow so it is seen as a cover as it contrasts against the vouchers inside.

INFORMATION SLIP.
INFORMATION SLIP

On my information slip I decided to take the research I had already collected on the EPO drug but summarise it in to bullet points. this will make it easier to read and take in, otherwise if i have to much scientific information the recipient will simply stop reading.
I simply followed the same style I have used through out when displaying type.

Because I have quite a bit of information inside my mail shot already I didn't really want to include anymore. However I didn't want to leave the reverse side of my info slip empty. To over come this problem I decided to create 'the anatomy of a banana'. This concept will enhance the humorous undertone and continue to over indulge the recipient with the wonders of a banana.
BANANA DIAGRAM
To display the innards of the banana I took the image I had made for the envelope opening and used multiple shape tools to make the banana look as though it had in dissected. This will continue the medical theme a well as keeping within the style I have already used through out this project.

DECIDING ON LAYOUT & COLOURS

I labelled the banana diagram with brief naming and descriptions. By doing this It may give the recipient more knowledge on this every day fruit (no matter how useless it may be).

DECIDING THE LAYOUT OF THE SLIP
Because i have based every thing on an angle I found it quite difficult to arrange a layout that was easy on the eye.

To ensure legibility I have decided to use the left version of this design.

EVALUATION.
Overall I am very happy with the way my mail shot turned out. The colours and underlining theme runs very consistent through out each aspect as well as the blunt/humorous language. I think I have compromised well with the information by not going to deep into the situation, but not leaving it too vague to understand. Having the text brief and to the point will help keep the readers attention and hopefully register. I am very happy with the way in which my envelope opens. i think this is the most important part of the mail shot not only because is looks a lot different to the stuff that usually comes through the mail box, but the way in which it opens has an inviting feel to it and people want to peel back the banana to see what it inside. I think that making the recipient want to open the envelope is one of the biggest hurdles you have to overcome so your issue and intensions can then be delivered.
If I could do this project again I think I would like to re address the mailing list. I think sending my mail shot to specialised sports universities was a good choice but i think the athletics clubs may have been bait ambitious as they are mail attended by younger athletes that would not really come into contact with the world of doping. I think instead of these clubs maybe sending the or recipients of 'Men's Health' Magazine would have been a much better option.  Because men are the biggest culprit of wanting to build and adapt their bodies in this way, they would be a great target of my mail shot. After flicking through this magazine the style in which many of the issues and recommendations followed a similar ethos to my work and I believe my type and image poster would not look so out of place in one of there pages.
I there were no restrictions on the stock used I wood definatley print the information leaflet and the vouches on thicker paper of thin card. Because they are double sided prints you can see through them but this is because I had to use thinner paper for the envelope so it would rip easily.
